While presenting music by composers from 11 nations around the world, we explore and discover sounds and emotions expressed both universally and uniquely. After this wonderful tour, we return home to the PNW to hear a Vocal Jazz set led by our very own inimitable Darcy Schmitt. VMC closes this picturesque vocal journey with works written by local and regional composers including Howard Meharg, Reginald Unterseher, and Judy Rose.
“There is such a big world of music out there, and we will miss so much of it if we only program music from the traditional European Classical canon.
“As I designed this concert, I worked to choose tuneful and entertaining music that offers a small glimpse into music from around the world, to open us up to new musical languages and possibilities. After this musical tour around the world, the second half of the concert will bring us back home with music by PNW composers, with vocal jazz and a few new choral works.Â
“It is so much fun to work with composers who live nearby. Through email, Zoom meetings, and coffee dates, I have had the opportunity to talk with the composers about their music, ask them questions about why they wrote what they wrote, and then work to present the music the way that they intended. This makes the music personal and exciting in a way that just doesn’t happen when working on music by Bach or Brahms.”
